MY BACKGROUND
Throughout my academic career, I have committed myself to a high standard of providing innovative educational experiences for our future nurses and nurse leaders.
During the past 14 years, I have taught in graduate and undergraduate programs. This includes graduate (MSN) administration, finance, leadership, and health policy courses. Additionally, the undergraduate (BSN) ranges from first semester medical-surgical courses to final semester critical care, management, clinical inquiry (research), community, and critical synthesis courses. The majority of my past clinical experience has been in critical care settings as well as management.
I have been extremely honored to receive recognition as an exemplary clinician with many teaching activities by providing an outstanding role model for students. I was presented the Advisor of the Year Award at the University of St. Thomas Annual University-wide Leadership Banquet. At UT Health School of Nursing (SON), in Houston, I was nominated by the student body for the John P. McGovern Outstanding Teacher Award in 2010 and again in 2013. In 2011, I was nominated and received this prestigious award. Students at each of the six UTHealth schools choose a John P. McGovern Outstanding Teacher for stimulating curiosity, promoting professional development and contributing to students’ abilities to think creatively. In addition, I received the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the Zeta Pi Chapter Outstanding Researcher Award for 2011.
I have been recognized as an educator whose teaching activities provide an outstanding role model and mentor for students. I received the Texas/Southwest Region Nursing Excellence Award in Education and Mentorship from NURSE.com’s Nursing Excellence Program. In August 2012, I was among 30 Texas regional finalists honored at the Texas Nursing Excellence Gala and was named a regional winner. I was chosen as a national finalist in the Education and Mentorship category for the Texas and Southwest region of the United States. In December 2012, I was selected by StateStats.org as one of the “Top 25 Nursing Professors in Texas” for proven excellence in teaching, service, and research.
